One of the states which banned affirmative action by initiative, Washington has seen declines in black population, educational enrollment at all levels and black business contracting, earning it a place as an unfavorable environment for black businesses.   For more details, consult the National Black Business Month official site or Year of Jubilee: State of Black Business tenth edition.

Our latest study, Silicon Ceiling 13, reports:

Almost five percent of the state’s black workforce was in computer, engineering and science

fields, with just over two percent in computer occupations.

Washington had 18,130 black college and graduate students in 2006 with fewer than 250 in

graduate science and engineering programs.
