Florida

Florida gained 80,000 black-owned firms over the five-year period from 2002 to 2007, according to preliminary estimates in the Survey of Business Owners. By 2007, the number had grown to 181,469 from 102,053 five years earlier, a rise of 77.8 percent.
Receipts almost doubled from $5.7 billion in 2002 to $10.7 billion in 2007, a gain of 86.3 percent.
The Sunshine State has excelled at providing access to capital, executive leadership and real-time monitoring of procurement in order to have a spiraling growth in black businesses during the ten years from 1997 to 2007.  It continues a high ranking among the states in Year of Jubilee: State of Black Business, tenth edition.
I had the opportunity to be the keynote speaker for the Northeast Florida Economic Opportunity Summit hosted by the First Coast African-American Chamber of Commerce in September 2009. Dr. Carlton B. Robinson is the dynamic leader of the chamber and a scholar on business diversity. Our newest study, Silicon Ceiling 13, reports:

Less than two percent of Florida’s black labor force worked in computer, engineering and science

fields, with one percent in computer occupations.

Florida had 1,291 black graduate students in science and 307 black graduate students in

engineering. The total number of black college and graduate students in Florida in 2006 was

206,655.
