Low Country Blues sermon on Sept. 20

imageRuling Elder John William Templeton, former commissioner to the Synod of the Pacific, gives a sermon “Low Country Blues” Sept. 20 at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 25 Lake St. in San Francisco during the morning service at 10 a.m.

Templeton, a fourth generation Presbyterian elder, will relate the covenant of his family’s participation in the denomination since the 1780s with the first published Negro spiritual Michael Row the Boat Ashore from the Sea Islands of South Carolina.

The Howard University alumnus was editorial assistant to the Journal of Religious Thought in the Howard School of Religion under liberation theology scholar Dr. J. Deotis Roberts.  He has also been editorial consultant to the National Baptist Convention U.S.A. Inc..

A member of Session at St. John’s, he represented the Presbytery of San Francisco on the Synod of the Pacific from 2012 to this summer.  He has also been clerk of session at New Liberation Presbyterian Church.
