As Sen. Barack Obama has been called a “socialist,” it is an example of a tactic which came to be known as McCarthyism, but actually has a much longer history in the United States.
The Red Scares of 1918-19 helped spark a number of race riots against African-Americans, including the Tulsa riots.
After World War II, W.E.B. DuBois, Paul Robeson and Nina Simone among others were denied the right to speak or perform because of supposed “communist” ties.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was regularly called a “communist” by J. Edgar Hoover and Southern sheriffs.
As McCain and Palin play this irresponsible game, federal officials have had to arrest at least three groups attempting assassinations. Rabid talk show hosts on Fox’s satellite radio channel call the senator “Maobama.”
This is the kind of thing we should be talking about, instead of the silliness of CNN putting comic D.L. Hughley on to promote even more racial stereotypes. Another black man was run over by a truck in Paris, Texas, just like the James Byrd murder, but we haven’t heard about it on major media.
But they can air ridiculous comments about “socialism” just because a candidate says it, whether true or not. These “red scares” have a history of turning violent. Those who light the fire should be considered arsonists.
