The political pot and kettle

With numerous commentators, see Harold Meyerson in Oct. 23 Washington Post,  remarking on the latent racism of the Republican campaign of Sen. John McCain, who’s lately been harping about ‘spreading the wealth’, it was inevitable that someone would realize that McCain has more black relatives than Sen. Obama, at least in the United States.

CNN’s Jason Carroll, appropriately enough, visited Carroll County, MS in a report aired today to talk to the black McCains descended from the 2,000 acre plantation with 52 slaves operated by Confederate soldier William McCain, who made the wrong choices about the future too.

Of course, to paraphrase Gen. Colin Powell, it shouldn’t matter what color one’s ancestors are.  If McCain takes that position regarding his own family, perhaps he’ll understand how toxic it is to call some folks “real Americans.”
